2 SCHEV Project – Lesson Learned Dorinda Trumbauer Funds for this project were provided by a grant from the federal Improving Teacher Quality State Grants (Title II, Part A) Professional Development Program administered by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.

6 Vertebrates / Invertebrates

7 Objectives:  5.5d TSW identify vertebrates and invertebrates  5.5-6 TSW group organisms into categories (vertebrate, invertebrate) using their characteristics. Name and describe two examples of each group.

9 Lesson / Strategy Adaptations I simplified the activities for the inclusion students according to their IEPs. I allowed students who seemed ready to use the computers to research further. When possible, Science was in Reading (co-worker)

10 Student Response / Learning Outcomes The students showed better interest in the topic. Some were more curious / or surprised in what they learned. More students passed achievement test since they started using this skill.

12 Overall Experience As a teacher, I learned new strategies to use with my students. As a mentor teacher, I learned how to become a better mentor teacher for the mentee teachers.

13 Mentors  As a Mentor I gained new strategies that helped me become a better Mentor  My Mentees became stronger teachers

14 Concluding Remarks As a classroom teacher I plan to become better at incorporating the many skills learned through this program. I will continue using the new skills I have already begun using with my future classes. As a mentor I learned a lot of new skills to use with the mentees that I feel helped me become a better mentor teacher. I found the videos to be very helpful, even for myself.
