3 The Church in the Middle Ages Religion was a huge part of everyday life People were Christian/Roman Catholic People were loyal to the Pope-- the head of the Roman Catholic Church Freedom of religion was not a huge concept

4 The Church in the Middle Ages Exception to the rule was….. Spain Ruled by Muslims, 700-1200 Spanish Muslims were called Moors Allowed religious diversity—Jews, Chr, whatever Muslims ruled parts of Spain until 1492

5 How did the Church get so powerful? 1.By being incredibly organized 2. By gaining wealth and political power, greater than some kings! 3. By spreading its teachings all over western Europe

8 Monks and Missionaries Monks took a vow of poverty, also promised to remain monks for life Missionaries roamed the continent, preaching the word of God, converting new Christians

9 Benedict of Nursia Left the church, disgusted by greed Formed a monastery with strict rules for the monks

10 St. Patrick As a boy he was captured from England by pirates and sold into slavery in Ireland When he grew up, he returned to Ireland and converted many of the Irish pagans to Catholicism by gaining their trust

11 Church Wealth Kings and nobles donated land or left it to the Church when they died Everyone tithed--paid taxes for services provided by Church Church became the biggest landowner Land=Wealth in the Middle Ages!!

12 Church teachings Super Huge Concept: There is heaven and there is hell Lead a good life and follow church laws and you will go to heaven People are sinful and weak, and need the church to save their souls

13 Importance of priests Priests were very important in spreading Christian teachings to every day people One on every manor Made sure they were following canon law — church laws that guided behavior

14 What did priests do? Mass on Sunday Weddings and baptisms Talk to villagers about their problems Bury the dead Heal the sick Teach reading and writing Collect tithes Keep all village records
