2  Body parts: skin, sweat and oil glands, hair and nails Accounts for 7% of the body’s weight Your skin is your largest organ  Function of integumentary system: Protection against pathogens (germs) Keeps you hydrated (water in body) THE INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM

3  Composed of 3 distinct layers.  Epidermis, Dermis, and hypodermis SKIN

4  Composed mostly of keratinized stratified squamous epithelium.  Contains 4 distinct cell types and 4 to 5 distinct layers. EPIDERMIS - OUTERMOST LAYER.

5  Made mostly of connective tissue.  Contains the hair follicles, sweat glands, oil glands, lymphatic vessels, and many sensory receptors. DERMIS - MIDDLE LAYER.

6  Energy holder – lots of fat cells  Helps hold in body heat and impacts to skin HYPODERMIS – BOTTOM LAYER
