4 bicameral Having TWO lawmaking parts: Senate and House of Representatives

5 Checks and Balances ~the system that allows each branch of government to limit the powers of the other branches

6 ~ a written plan that provides the basic framework of government; “the law of the land” The Constitution

7 Executive Branch carries out the laws

8 federalism ~The constitutional system that shares power between the national and state government

9 impeach ~ to formally accuse an official of a crime related to official duties

10 interest group ~an organization that actively promotes the views of some part of the public on specific issues

11 interstate commerce ~trade and other business dealings that cross state lines

12 Judicial Branch ~The part of the government consisting of the Supreme Court and lower federal courts that INTERPRETS the laws

13 Legislative Branch ~the law making part of the government

14 party ~an organized political group

15 popular sovereignty ~the idea that the authority of government comes from the people

16 VETO ~to reject a proposed law or a bill; only the president can veto bills
