2 Warm Up 1. Grab an index card from the cart 2. Write full name on the index card 3. Write student ID # below your name on the index card 4. Answer this question on your index card: What are we studying now in science class (what is our objective)?

6 Class in the library today… In just a moment, we will be walking to the library for our class today. You will be logging into a chrome book in the library to conduct some research You will receive a handout detailing your assignment Before we get to the library we will go over the directions together

7 Step 1: Article to Read…. You will receive an article titled The Element Diet Read the article and answer the questions on the back Each question must be copied in your notebook and answered in a complete sentence Does anyone have any questions?

8 Step 2: Record these notes where we left off last class… Atoms = smallest building blocks of matter = too small for us to see remember the sewing pin: millions of atoms can fit on the head of a sewing pin

11 Step 3: Elements in my Food…. Get an empty cereal box Look at the nutritional label on your box and determine what elements are found inside You will be using technology to help you

17 Elements in my Food…. You are not looking for vitamins, only ELEMENTS The elements will be listed on the lower half of the nutritional label Vitamins include: A, C, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Vitamin B 6, Folic Acid, Vitamin B 12 You will not find vitamins on the periodic table

18 Logging out of Technology… Log out using the procedure you used when you took your MAP assessment You will place the chrome book number back into the slot that matches your seat number (Seat 1 will return the chrome book to slot #1) Any questions? I will call you up based on your row

19 Write this down… Molecules: the smallest unit of a substance that has 2 or more atoms joined together Draw and label these molecules

20 Write this down… Molecules can be the same type of atoms bonded together (O 2 molecule = air we breathe) (H 2 molecule = hydrogen) Molecules can be different types of atoms bonded together (H 2 O = water molecule)

23 Warm Up- Reading Article and answering questions Read the article “Atoms and Molecules” Answer the questions in your notebook (find where you left off last class) Very Important: each question must be copied in your notebook and answered in a complete sentence.

24 How well did we comprehend? What does a diamond and a lump of coal have in common with one another? A diamond and a lump of coal are made from the same kind of atoms (carbon atoms). What are different kinds of atoms called? Different kinds of atoms are called elements. What is a molecule? A molecule is formed when two or more atoms join together. How is carbon dioxide formed? Carbon dioxide is formed when coal is burned. Carbon atoms from the coal combine with oxygen in the air to form carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) How many molecules can be found in 1 plastic bottle? It takes millions of atoms to make just one plastic bottle.
