2 Journal Prompt 1 Imagine writing is your profession. Now, imagine you also have a spouse and a family like Dickens did when writing A Christmas Carol. Would you rather have a few people purchase and read for your book or have it be widely popular and make no money from it? Remember, you have a family you need to support, but you also deeply care about your writing. Explain which option you would choose and justify your decision.

5 Journal 2 We will soon learn in A Christmas Carol that the protagonist Scrooge is a Miser, a person who hoards wealth. As a child, Dickens’ family struggled with finances in the midst of the Industrial Revolution and his family lived across the street from a Work House. What connections do you see between Dickens’ life, A Christmas Carol, and the Industrial Revolution. Write as many connections as you can in the next 5 minutes. You may write this as a list or a paragraph. Extension: How does Scrooge’s characterization relate to the political cartoon of the man eating children?

6 Journal 3 Idioms about Money:  “Money makes the world go round.”  “Show me the money.”  “Time is money.”  “Money can’t buy happiness.” In A Christmas Carol the main character’s opinion about what it means to be wealthy changes drastically by the end of play. Part 1: What does it mean to be wealthy? Does having money matter? Part 2: Choose one of the idioms above. Explain why it is an idiom. Is it true? Use logical deductions to construct your answer. Part 3: Write your own idiom about money. Remember, an idiom is a phrase that wouldn’t make sense to someone who doesn’t natively speak English.

7 Reading A Christmas Carol Plays read differently the narrative writing or poetry. When an author writes a play, it is composed on dialogue and stage directions. The stage directions are as important as the dialogue….. Why?

9 Journal Analysis  What did you learn about the setting of A Christmas Carol in the Prologue?  How did the setting contribute to the mood of the play? Cite specific evidence from the text and name the mood in your response.
