Where in History The code of Hammurabi is one of the earliest known sets of written laws. The laws were created by Hammurabi(The King of Babylon). Babylonia was a large empire that existed around 1700 BC. Babylonia is located in the mid east which is now known as Iraq

Hammurabi was the king of Babylon. During his reign, he codified, or recorded, the rules and penalties for every aspect of Babylonian life, from the ownership of property, to the rights of adopted children. Hammurabi

1. If anyone is committing a robbery and is caught, then he shall be put to death. 2. If anyone opens his ditches to water his crops, but is carless and the water floods the fields of his neighbor, then he shall pay for the loss. 3. If a man takes a wife and she is seized by disease, and if he then desires to take a second wife, he shall not put away his (first) wife. But he shall keep her in the house and support her as long as she lives. 4. If anyone brings an accusation of any crime before the elders and does not prove what he has charged, he shall, if it be a capital charge, be put to death. 5. If a judge shall try a case, reach a decision, and present his judgment in writing, and if later error shall appear in his decision and it be through his own fault, then he shall be publicly removed from the judge’s bench, and never again shall he sit there to render judgment. Laws under the code

6. If anyone steals the property of a temple or a court, he shall be put to death, and also the one who receives the stolen thing from him shall be put to death. Laws Under the Code continued… Stone in which laws were written on.

Although many of Hammurabi’s laws were excessive and cruel, many of them had an influence on the modern laws used in Canada today. For example we share the belief that murder, theft, assault, and lying in court are wrong and should be punished. We also have laws today that include restitution, the concept of making payment to the victim of crimes such as property damage. Restitution was one of the most important laws that Hammurabi created.
