3 Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments. 4 Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessment incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETSS. Teachers: design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity. develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress. customize and personalize learning activities to address students' diverse learning styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources. provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative assessments aligned with content and technology standards and use resulting data to inform learning and teaching. The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the disciplines she or he teaches and can create learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for pupils. 2. Teachers know how children grow. The teacher understands how children with broad ranges of ability learn and provides instruction that supports their intellectual, social, and personal development. 17 3. Teachers understand that children learn differently. The teacher understands how pupils differ in their approaches to learning and the barriers that impede learning and can adapt instruction to meet the diverse needs of pupils, including those with disabilities and exceptionalities. 4. Teachers know how to teach. The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies, including the use of technology, to encourage children's development of critical thinking, problem solving, and performance skills. 18 5. Teachers know how to manage a classroom. The teacher uses an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation. 6. Teachers communicate well. The teacher uses effective verbal and nonverbal communication techniques as well as instructional media and technology to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom. WI Teacher Standards Example: Webquest – Promotes interaction among peers and offers an opportunity for students to be engaged in an area of the world thousands of miles away Example: Webquest – Inquiry-based interactive and collaborative project which utilizes media for information and as a basis for final projects

19 7. Teachers are able to plan different kinds of lessons. The teacher organizes and plans systematic instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, pupils, the community, and curriculum goals. 8. Teachers know how to test for student progress. The teacher understands and uses formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social, and physical development of the pupil. 20 9. Teachers are able to evaluate themselves. The teacher is a reflective practitioner who continually evaluates the effects of his or her choices and actions on pupils, parents, professionals in the learning community and others and who actively seeks out opportunities to grow professionally. 10. Teachers are connected with other teachers and the community. The teacher fosters relationships with school colleagues, parents, and agencies in the larger community to support pupil learning and well-being and acts with integrity, fairness and in an ethical manner. WI Teacher Standards Example: Webquest – Offers teachers who use the website full access and also contains contact information for comments and questions (which is also recommended on the site) Example: Webquest – A tool offered to all teachers for educational purposes, and through contact information allows for expanding of teacher-to-teacher networks, especially mine.

22 Core Subjects and 21st Century Themes Mastery of core subjects and 21st century themes is essential for students in the 21st century. Core subjects include English, reading or language arts, world languages, arts, mathematics, economics, science, geography, history, government and civics. We believe schools must move beyond a focus on basic competency in core subjects to promoting understanding of academic content at much higher levels by weaving 21st century interdisciplinary themes into core subjects: Global Awareness Financial, Economic, Business and Entrepreneurial Literacy Civic Literacy Health Literacy 21 st Century Framework Example: Webquest – Increases global awareness and allows for learning across multiple sciences and also economics. This webquest can easily be tied into many different core subject classes.

23 Learning and Innovation Skills Learning and innovation skills are what separate students who are prepared for increasingly complex life and work environments in the 21st century and those who are not. They include: Creativity and Innovation Critical Thinking and Problem Solving Communication and Collaboration 21 st Century Framework Example: Webquest – Encourages creativity of student critical thinking and facilitates collaboration among students, preparing them for working as a team member in their future careers

24 Information, Media and Technology Skills People in the 21st century live in a technology and media- driven environment, marked by access to an abundance of information, rapid changes in technology tools and the ability to collaborate and make individual contributions on an unprecedented scale. To be effective in the 21st century, citizens and workers must be able to exhibit a range of functional and critical thinking skills, such as: Information Literacy Media Literacy ICT (Information, Communications and Technology) Literacy 21 st Century Framework Example: Webquest Final Project Video – Encourages use of media technology to express ideas, a rising trend in education

25 Life and Career Skills Developing a comprehensive framework for 21st century learning requires more than identifying specific skills, content knowledge, expertise and literacies. An innovative support system must be created to help students master the multi-dimensional abilities required of them in the 21st century. The Partnership has identified five critical support systems that ensure student mastery of 21st century skills: 21 st Century Standards Assessments of 21 st Century Skills 21 st Century Curriculum and Instruction 21 st Century Professional Development 21 st Century Learning Environments 21 st Century Framework Example: Webquest - Offers multiple opportunities for student development, including critical thinking, collaboration and team work, inquiry, awareness of worldly issues, technology literacy and utilization, awareness of internet tools and thinking “outside of the box”
