State of the Atmosphere SWBAT describe the various properties of the atmosphere and how they interact; explain why atmospheric properties change with the changing altitude

Temperature vs. Heat Temperature A measure of how fast or slow molecules are moving Fast moving molecules have high temperature Slow moving molecules have a low temperature Heat The transfer of energy that occurs because of a difference in temperature

Temperature vs. Heat Do all surfaces or substances absorb heat at the same rate? Think of the beach. How does the sand feel, the air, the water? Dew point The temperature to which air must be cooled at constant pressure to reach saturation

Vertical Temperature Changes Condensation Occurs when matter changes state from a gas to a liquid Lifted condensation level The height at which condensation occurs

Air Pressure and Density How does altitude affect pressure? Low altitudes have high pressure due to the amount of atmosphere pressing down on it. Can you think of an example where pressure needs to be regulated? Planes are pressurized because there is less pressure higher in the atmosphere. Divers need to decompress because the further down they go the more pressure there is.

Pressure-Temperature-Density Relationship What are the properties of atmosphere and how do they interact? Pressure Increases with depth Temperature Increases or decreases directly with the temperature Density Increases and decreases inversely with temperature

Pressure-Temperature-Density Relationship Why do atmospheric properties change with the changing altitude? Temperature changes with height and pressure as well. All the related properties will change with these as well.

Temperature Inversions Temperature inversion An increase in temperature with height in an atmospheric layer It inverts the temperature-altitude relationship How would you define wind? Air moving from an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure Similar to diffusion

Relative Humidity Humidity Amount of water vapor in the air Relative humidity The ratio of the amount of water vapor in a given volume compared to the amount of water vapor that specific volume could contain

Get your Lab Notebooks In groups of 2 or 3 complete the problem solving lab on page 283 Title: Interpreting Graphs

With a partner Complete assessment questions 1-5 on page 284 Answer in complete sentences, restating the question. If you don’t finish in class, complete for homework.
