How to get the most out of tutoring

Why go to tutoring? Help with a specific topic or lesson Struggle with a subject historically – (ex: always struggled in math) Missed notes or class Avoid having problems even if you’re doing well Pre-teach/learn topics that are coming up

When do I know if I need tutoring? You’re doing your HW, studying, and grades are still low. You don’t understand the topics or problems on your homework You struggle with managing your time to study and get HW done You are usually confused in class You’ve done well in a subject until now, and aer having difficulties

What should I take with me? Bring lecture notes with you – – make sure they are legible. Presenting all of your work will help your teacher see where your gaps are. Pencil and Paper – You can add to your notes, or take new notes during tutoring. Questions – – Tutoring is not a long enough time to pull out what you don’t know and need to learn. Come prepared with an udnerstanding of what you know, and what you have trouble with. Write down your questions if you struggle to remember them.

What tutoring is A chance for you to review important information and get help on specific areas you are confused about. Repeated review of a topic for a test or quiz. An opportunity to be honest about your learning process and advocate for yourself

What tutoring is not Tutors/teachers cannot do your homework for you. – You can bring homework to do in front of them and ask questions when you get stuck. The first time for you to learn material. A chance to show up and have the work done for you. A miracle – if you aren’t putting in the effort, tutoring won’t magically save your grade.

How can I get the most out of it? Be prepared to learn Your tutor will not be doing HW for you – they can help you understand the subject matter. You need to be ready to soak up the material so that you can apply it on HW or test problems.

Explain how you approach or think about a problem or concept. This can help a teacher/tutor understand where you are and where the areas of struggle may be. Let your tutor know when a particular method of explanation make since – then they can help use that in class or in another tutoring session to help you be successful.

Be on time!! Don’t give up! Keep studying afterwards – the tutor can’t memorize information or practice for you. Don’t wait until your next tutoring time to review notes or a study guide. You should be confident with the material on your own, or be able to identify what specific topic you struggle with. Use what you’ve learned!
