1 Text: Matthew 5:8

2  The word used to describe the heart that shall see God is "pure" ("katharos" in Greek). It is used in three ways.   1. Originally it simply meant "clean." It was used to describe soiled clothes that had been washed clean.  2. It was regularly used to describe corn that had been winnowed or sifted from all chaff. It was also used of an army which had been purged of all its discontented, cowardly, unwilling and inefficient soldiers. It was therefore describing a force of first-class fighting men.  3. It commonly appeared with another Greek adjective "akerotos." This word was used to describe milk that was unadulterated with water or a metal which was free from any alloys.
