Plot

Exposition

 This part of the essay will contain 1. Characters 2. Point of View (PoV) 3. Setting  This is also know as the beginning in a narrative essay.

Character

 Character is anyone or thing that plays a role in the story. It can be a person or it can be an object.  There are two types of Characters. 1. Protagonist = the good guy 2. Antagonist = the bad guy

Character  Next you have the minor characters. This is anyone who doesn’t play a major part in the story.

Character  As you read the story, the author will make you love them or hate them as the story progresses.  The author does this by their actions, thoughts, or what they say.  What are some characters in movies that you have seen that you hate or that you love. Think about tv shows that if this character died or left, you would stop watching the show.  Think about the show that you wish this character would leave.  Talk to a partner and ask what characters they hate and love.

Point of View

 The view of the story being told  There are four different points of view 1. First person 2. Second person 3. Third person Limited 4. Third person omniscient

Point of View  First person is when the story is told by a person in the story. They will use the word I, we, us, our. They are a participant of the story.  Any personal narrative will be told in first person.

Point of View  Second person is not used very often in writing. That is why most teachers don’t teach what is second person.  It has more to do with advertising or stories where the characters talk to the audience. What are some movies, tv shows or books you know where the main character will talk to the audience.

Point of View  Third person Limited is when the main character knows what is going on by what they see and hear.

Point of View  Third person Omniscient is when a character knows what everyone is doing, thinking, feeling, or saying.  They would be all knowing.

Setting

 Setting is all about time and place of the story.  Most people associate setting with place, but they forget that it is also time.

Setting  Time can be said in many different ways. 1. Time 2. seasons 3. Parts of the day 4. Parts of the year 5. Parts of the century

Setting  Place is very simple. It’s the location of the story.

Conflict

 The conflict is a problem. You have two types of conflict. 1. Major conflict is the main problem. It’s the problem the main character is trying to solve. You will find this problem at the beginning of the story. 2. Minor conflicts are the small problems that the main character goes through to solve the major conflict. It is located in the rising action of the story. These conflicts are easy to solve.

Rising Action

 Rising action is made up of many minor conflicts. It increases the suspense of the story that makes the story interesting. Most of the story takes place in the rising action.  The characters will encounter many small conflicts and they get solved quickly.  Minor conflicts can be really simple and quick to solve.

Climax

 This is the hardest part to find in a story. It’s the highest point of suspension.  The climax is not the answer to the conflict. It’s right before you find the answer.

Falling Action

 This where we find out answers to the story. All your questions should be answered here in this part.  The author brings closure to the story. If you still have questions, there will be a sequel or the author did a horrible job at ending their story.

Resolution

The laugh  This is where you see the characters laugh at the end. In movies, it tells you what the character did off camera.
