5 What was the Black Death?
A devastating epidemic from About 75 million people died (1/3 of Europe and China’s population)

6 More horrible histories (Bottom of Notes)
As you are watching, jot down some things they pointed out about the black plague Who’s the man in the crow nose? What were some of the home remedies they tried to use? Who/what did they think caused the Black Plague?

7 3 Forms of the Disease Bubonic Plague- painful lymph node swellings
Septicemic Plague (also called “blood poisoning)- attacked the blood system Pneumonic Plague- attacked the respiratory system

8 The Bubonic Plague Mortality Rate: 30-75 % Painful lymph node swelling
Oozing pus and blood Dark blotches  Black Death! Mortality Rate: % Once it explodes, death soon follows

9 The Septicemic Plague Attacked the blood system
Skin turns deep shades of purple (almost black) The Black Death Mortality Rate: close to 100%.

10 The Pneumonic Plague 2nd most commonly seen form of the Black Death

11 What caused the Black Plague?
Remember PERCEPTION vs. REALITY??? What is the difference?

12 Perception People living in the Middle Ages thought that God was punishing them for their sins so he sent the plague down to kill them Religion controlled everything No scientific reasoning behind this theory

13 But this is what ACTUALLY caused the Black Plague (REALITY)

14 The Disease Cycle Human is infected!
Flea drinks rat blood that carries the bacteria. Bacteria multiply in flea’s gut. Human is infected! Flea bites human and puts infected blood into human wound. Flea’s gut clogged with bacteria.

15 The Path of the Plague Started in Asia
Spread by merchants on trade routes Spread throughout Europe Lasted 3 years Passing through Italy France England Germany Denmark

16 Efforts to stop the Plague

People living in cities Wealthy fled to the countryside (Isaac Newton) Why would the city be the most affected? Hint: Think about the ways in which the countryside differs from the city?
