Socially responsible computing is a major concern because of the many ways an information worker’s work can affect other people Social Responsibility: ethical and legal behavior Laws: define society’s proper behavior and include actions that government can take against improper behavior Ethics: principles and moral standard that guide choices and behavior of humans

3. Social Responsibility of Companies Socially responsible companies attempt to balance interests of all groups: employees, stockholders, customers…. Company must see to the well being of all society, may it mean higher costs for company or even customers

4. How companies can be socially responsible Donate money to local charities Give employees time off to do volunteer work Avoid fraud and deception of the public Play active role in developing community programs

5. What about the employees? Companies must offer employees fair wages, a good working environment, and treat them with respect Code of Ethics: a policies and procedures regarding the behavior of information workers Code of Ethics can cover: Email privacy Software licenses and copyrights Access to hardware and files Data and intelligence property ownership

6. Guidelines for information professionals Informed consent: if in doubt about the ethics or law of an action, inform those whom will be affected by your decision and proceed after their consent The higher ethic: Take the action which achieves greater good for everyone involved Most restrictive action: When deciding to take an action or not, imagine that the worst that could happen will happen.
