Landscapes of New York

What are landscapes? 3 Major Classifications: Mountains / Highlands Plains / Lowlands Plateaus / Uplands  are the visible features of Earth’s surface where the atmosphere, hydrosphere & lithosphere meet.

New York has all three! Notice the Catskills are part of a plateau, and are not really mountains

 All Landscapes consist of 3 major types 1.Mountains(Highlands)  High elevation compared to surrounding areas, or sea level (at least 300m high)  Created by tectonic plates colliding (Orogeny)  Distorted rock layers (folds, tilt, faults)  Sharp changes in slope  Often non-sedimentary rock

2.Plateaus (Uplands)  High elevations above sea level  Undistorted rock layers (flat bedrock)  Undistorted = Horizontal  Mostly Sedimentary Rock  Streams may have cut steep slopes (ex. Grand Canyon) Plateau b/t Rocky Mts. & West Coast

Plateau / Uplands

Which is a plateau & which is a mountain? Both Plateaus….why? Bedrock is Horizontal Layers  What’s the rolling surface on B from?  Water Erosion

Which is a Mt. & Plateau? B = Mountain (folded layers)  Which is an Arid Climate & which is a humid climate?  B = Humid: rounded slopes from water  A = Arid: slopes are steep, not rounded

3.Plains (Lowlands)  Low elevations  Level surface with little change in slope  Often horizontal rock structure  Lots of sand, gravels, clays

Landforms are the result of the interaction of tectonic forces and the processes of weathering, erosion, and deposition.

Landscape Development Summary Landscape regions are determined by: Bedrock structure and elevation Landscape development is determined by: –Amount of uplifting forces compared to leveling forces. Landscape region formed when uplift is greater than erosion: Mountains Landscape region formed when erosion is greater than uplift: Plains
