2 Standard 1.A Mission and Goals The institution’s mission and goals define the institution, including its educational activities, its student body, and its role within the higher education community. The evaluation proceeds from the institution’s own definition of its mission and goals

3 University of Oregon’s Approach Specifically sought to emphasize mission and the issues that facilitated or impeded achieving the mission Posited that we faced unique circumstances of academic leadership change.

4 An Irony in Regional Accreditation Presidents and Provosts have sometimes criticized regional accreditation with an imbedded call for more emphasis on mission. NWCCU, in its very first standard, is saying that the whole process is “mission driven.”

7 Issues Document A snapshot of the work of the Accreditation Self-Study Steering Committee NWCCU approved request to approach the decennial review in terms of UO mission. Steering Committee began its work by defining and grouping “issues” to consider as the basis of analysis and study.

8 Element 1 A.5 The institution’s mission and goals give direction to all of its educational activities, to its admission policies, selection of faculty, allocation of resources and to planning. THAT SAYS IT ALL…

11 Recurring Planning Procedures President’s Senior Executive Staff Retreat Dean’s Retreat Department Heads Retreat Leadership Council Retreat –Administration, Faculty, Staff … and so forth, just as at your institution

12 Standard 9: Institutional Integrity The institution adheres to the highest ethical standards and its representation to its constituencies and the public; --in its teaching, scholarship, and service --in its treatment of its students, faculty, and staff --in its relationship with regulatory and accrediting agencies

13 Integrity Illustrate in the required documents, required exhibits, and suggested materials Demonstrate in the candor and honesty of your analysis
