9 MAAP & ComPAS January 31, 2007 9 Strategic Practices: Instruction Students ask and respond to higher order questions using academic language. Teachers use instructional practices that will accelerate the achievement of all students--in every classroom, every school, every family, every day. Teachers focus instruction on student mastery of key standards in the curriculum, with appropriate pacing. Teachers regularly assess for student understanding, and adjust or differentiate instruction to ensure every student masters the key standards. Teachers establish and sustain a supportive and culturally responsive environment.

10 MAAP & ComPAS January 31, 2007 10 MAAP and ComPAS Strategic Practices PProfessional Learning Communities Every teacher regularly collaborates during the workday and beyond to set goals and objectives, analyze individual student data, and plan and adjust instruction.  Students Goal Setting Every student sets academic, career, personal growth, and work habit goals; makes a plan to meet the goals; and regularly monitors progress toward the goals.  Family Engagement Families and caregivers have meaningful roles in school decision-making, engage in advocacy and collaborate with teachers on student goal setting. They learn grade-level standards and are provided the opportunity to effectively improve student success.  Inside/Outside Advocate Every student has access to an adult advocate who is engaged in the student’s academic progress and personal development.
