3 How are the new tests different? Aligned with new content standards for ELA and mathematics Reflect critical thinking and problem solving skills needed for college and the 21st century job market Taken on a computer Adaptive - during the test, questions become more or less difficult based on how student is performing Provide tools and supports (e.g., Zoom In, highlighter, masking)

4 SBAC - Item and Task Types ● Selected response > choose one or more correct answers ● Technology-enhanced > edit text or draw an object ● Constructed-response > requires a short written or numerical response ● Performance Tasks > a complex set of tasks to demonstrate understanding ○ conduct research then write an argumentative essay citing source evidence ○ read a word problem in math and answer several questions related to it

9 Testing Conditions When? After 66% of the school year has been completed 2016 VLSD Testing Window is April 11 - May 20 How often? Once a year grades 3-8 and 11 How long? Untimed Breaks are permitted Estimate = Grades 3-5 > 7 hours ; Grades 6-8 > 8 hours

11 Steps 1 - 3 1 - Disaggregate assessment data Annual Trimester Standards Unit/Week 2 - Plan 36 week Instructional Calendar (CCIF) Start of year Adjust weekly, as needed based on student data 3 - Teach standards based lessons Staff Development/Trainings - monthly on Minimum Days, plus multi-day workshops throughout the school year and during summer Friday Focus Groups - assessment results, student work samples, pacing Peer and administrator observations

12 Step 4 4 - Assess student mastery of the standards CCIF indicates when each standard (or set of standards) is tested Types of assessments mirror those found on the SBAC Selected response Technology-enhanced Constructed-response Performance Tasks

13 Steps 5 - 8 5 - identify students needing additional support and provide tutorials 6 - identify students who have mastered the standard and provide acceleration 7 - maintain mastery of each standard (review) 8 - provide training for teachers
