1 Spanish Words “White” People Can’t Say Media Analysis and Evaluation
Karen Keith

2 Media to be Analyzed Spanish Words "White" People Can't Say

3 I. All media are constructions
What amount of editing (if any) was used in the production of this video? Do you think that this video is scripted? Do you think the people in this video were chosen for a specific reason?

4 ll. The media are commercial entities.
Is this video attempting to convince it’s viewers of anything? If so, what? Is there a specific audience targeted through this video? If so, what type of person may be most likely to watch?

5 III. Media communicates values and ideology
Does this media communicate a message about how people from across the globe communicate? What types of messages does this video send about how people try to assimilate words into their existing schemas within the English language?

6 IV. Media have social and political implications
How could this video change the way an individual thinks about a foreign language (Spanish in this case)? What issues most surround this video socially or perhaps even politically?

7 V. Media forms are related to content
Would this video be as effective if it was in the form of PowerPoint or Prezi? For example, a list of statistics about the amount of bilingual and non-bilingual people? How do the people in the video help to make it more entertaining and exciting?

8 VI. The media have aesthetic qualities
How does the music in this video add to its aesthetic appeal? Or does it? Do the clothes worn by the people in the video have any implications?

9 VII. Audiences are involved in the process of creating meaning
How might a bilingual person view this video as opposed to a non- bilingual person? How might a Latino person view this video as opposed to an American or non-Spanish speaker? How could one change their interpretation of this video and the false implications that it indicates?

10 YOUR TURN! Students, it is your turn to make a video of yourselves saying words in Spanish and introducing yourselves in Spanish. I would like to incorporate group work to make this lesson exciting. This video should include some editing techniques and a general knowledge of subject and course material. The video should include every group member and each person should say at least 3 words. With about five people per group, this should be a total of 15 words. Unlike the video shown, you all should also define the word in English. The main goal…gain knowledge and have fun in the process! Video length must be 3-5 minutes.
