T HE ARTS ( PLURAL ) COVERS EVERYTHING IN THE NETWORK. A RT ( SINGULAR / UNCOUNTABLE ) USUALLY MEANS FINE ART, BUT IT CAN ALSO REFER TO TECHNIQUE AND CREATIVITY. H AVE YOU READ THE ARTS PAGE IN THE PAPER TODAY ? ( COVERS EVERYTHING IN THE NETWORK ) S HE ' S A GREAT ART LOVER. ( LOVES PAINTING AND SCULPTURE ) S HAKESPEARE WAS SKILLED IN THE ART OF POETRY. ( CREATIVE ABILITY ) D ANCE REFERS TO THE ART OF DANCING, ESPECIALLY MODERN DANCER OR MORE TRADITIONAL BALLET. A NOVEL IS A LONG STORY ; A SHORT WORK OF PROSE FICTION IS A SHORT STORY. When we talk about a performing art in general, we can omit the definite article, e.g., I love (the) opera/ballet/theatre/movies. For a particular performance we say: Would you like to go to the opera/ballet/theatre/movies tonight?

We went to see a new production (1) of Hamlet last night. The sets (2) were incredibly realistic and the costumes (3) were wonderful. It was a good cast (4) and I thought the direction (5) was excellent. Anthony O‘Donnell gave a marvelous performance (6). It got rave reviews (7) in the papers today. (1) The presentation of a work, especially a play or movie (2) Scenery, buildings, furniture on the stage or in a studio (3) Clothes the actors wear un the performance (4) All the actors in it (5) The way the director organizes the performance (6) And (7) are typical collocations; (7) means “got very enthusiastic comments”

There’s an exhibit/exhibition of painting by Manet at the National Gallery.

T HE O PERA S OCIETY IS GOING A PERFORMANCE OF D ON G IOVANNI.

B ERGMAN ’ S P ERSONA IS PLAYING AT THE P ARADISE T HEATER NEXT WEEK.

W HICH BRANCH OF THE ARTS DO YOU THINK THESE PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT ? “It’s called Peace. It stands in the main square.” Sculpture (The verb stand is often associated with statues; it could also be architecture, if Peace is interpreted as the name of a building or huge monument.) “It was so dull that I fell asleep during the second act.” A performance of a play at a theatre (Plays are divided into acts –major divisions – and scenes –smaller divisions.) “ It was just pure movement, with very exciting rhythms.” Dance (movement and rhythm are the clues.) “It doesn’t have to rhyme to be good.” Poetry (Rhyme –having the same sounds at the ends of lines –is sometimes thought of as a necessary quality of poetry.) “Oils to me don’t have the delicacy of watercolors.” Painting (Oil-based and water-based paints are two of the most popular types of paint used by artists.) “Her design for the new city hall won an award.” Architecture (We talk of the design of a building.) “I like to read them and imagine what they’d be like on stage.” Plays (Drama texts in written form.) “Overall, the performance was good, though the tenor wasn’t at his best.” Opera (Performance and tenor –an adult male singer in an opera –are the clues.)

E ACH OF THESE SENTENCES CONTAINS A MISTAKE OF USAGE. F IND THE MISTAKE AND CORRECT IT. Y OU MAY NEED A DICTIONARY. Example: The scene in this theatre projects right out into the audience. Not “scene” but “stage” (the place where the actors perform) What’s the name of the editorial of that book you recommended? Was it Cambridge University Press? What’s the name of the publisher of that book you recommended? (An editorial is an article in a newspaper or magazine giving the opinions of the editor on matters of interest/concern.) Most of the novels in this collection are only five or six pages long. They’re great for reading on short trips. Most of the (short) stories in this collection are only five or six pages long. They’re great for reading on short trips. (A novel is a long work, usually more than 100 pages. Here short story or just is clearly what the speaker is referring to.) When will the President’s biography be performed? When will the President’s biography be published? (A biography –a book- is published; a play, ballet, opera, etc., is performed.)

A SK QUESTIONS FOR WHICH THESE REMARKS WOULD BE APPROPRIATE ANSWERS 1. Yes, it got rave reviews. 2. Was the play a success? 3. No, I’m not really a concertgoer, but thanks anyway. 4. Would you like a ticket for the concert tonight? 5. Oh, some beautiful old buildings and some ugly new ones. 6. What’s the architecture like in your hometown? 7. The cast was fine, but the direction was weak. 8. Was it a good production/performance? 9. A new Canadian film; would you like to see it? 10. What’s playing at the Arts Theatre this week? 11. It’s OK, but I usually prefer modern dance. 12. Do you like ballet?
