2 Title 5, Chapter 6 has undergone many changes that impact curriculum planning, development, and approval. How is your college dealing with these changes? Please join us for this discussion that will explore ways to promote local implementation dialog prior to local implementation and will highlight those higher priority areas that Curriculum Committees and Senates need to address.

7 Curriculum Committee in Policy Development Shared governance  Education Code §70902 and Title 5 §55002 – Authorize primary recommendatory power of academic senates in the area of curriculum  The Curriculum Committee shall be established by mutual agreement by the college and/or district administration and the Academic Senate

8 Examples of Policies Pre- and Co-requisites, Limitations of Enrollment Program Review Information Competency Associate Degree and Certificate requirements including: recency, residency, GPA, etc. Withdrawal, course repetition Program and Course Discontinuance

10 Title 5 changes effective August 16, 2007 – Prerequisites, Co-requisites, and Advisories §55003 – Policies for Prerequisites, Co-requisites and Advisories on Recommended Preparation  Definitions clarified  Minimum process for content review, level of scrutiny  Data collected using sound research practices  6-year cycle for academic, 2-year for vocational  Communication or computational requirement can only be established on a course-by-course basis  Challenge process for student

11 Title 5 changes effective August 16, 2007 – Philosophy and Criteria for AA Degree and General Ed §55060 – District Policy  The governing board of each community college shall adopt policy consistent with the provisions of this article. The policy shall be published in the college catalog under appropriate headings, and filed with the Chancellor’s Office as required by section 51004. §55061 – District Policy  The governing board of a community college district shall adopt a policy which states its specific philosophy on General Education.

12 Title 5 Changes effective June 16, 2008 – Course Repetition §55040 – District Policy for Course Repetition - The governing board of each community college district shall adopt and publish policies and procedures pertaining to the repetition of credit courses.  Repeatable courses  Repetition to alleviate substandard course work  Repetition due to significant lapse of time  Repetition of variable unit courses  Repetition due to extenuating circumstances  Academic renewal without course repetition

13 Title 5 changes effective June 16, 2008 - Withdrawal §55024 – The governing board of a district, which decides to provide a withdrawal procedure, shall adopt a policy, which provides for withdrawal from credit courses consistent with the following... adoption implemented July 1, 2009  Withdrawal period through 75 percent of a term  Notation of “W”  Calculation of “W” in grade point averages  Number of times permitted for “W” symbol  Military withdrawal
