What: Context clues are hints that surround unfamiliar words or phrases and clarify their meanings Why: Context clues are important because they help you understand unfamiliar words. How: Good readers use context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words by: Underlining the word you do not know. Read the sentence without the unfamiliar word. Think about the sentence and what familiar word would fit in. Determine a meaning for the unfamiliar word.
