3 Scientists classify animals They are grouped to make it easier for scientists to study them. There are two main groups of animals: –Those with a backbone inside their bodies. Vertebrates –Those with a backbone outside their bodies. Invertebrates Which group do you belong to?

4 Shared Characteristics Organisms in the same group have similar characteristics We are going to focus on insects. All insects have a few similar characteristics.few similar characteristics They have an exoskeleton. 6 Two pair of wings Insects, like this dragonfly, have two pair of wings. Their wings are symmetrical.

7 Three pair of legs To be an classified as an insect, an organism must have THREE pair of legs. These legs are symmetrical.

8 Other characteristics Usually, they are small in size. Insects, like all animals, move. –They jump, fly, or walk. They cannot produce their own food by means of photosynthesis, but are consumers. They also need water and air to live.
