1 US Climate Change Science Program Incorporating the US Global Change Research Program and the Climate Change Research Initiative U.S. Climate Change Science Program An Interagency Perspective on Climate and Global Change Education http://www.climatescience.gov

2 U.S. Climate Change Science Program Incorporating the US Global Change Research Program and the Climate Change Research Initiative Scientific literacy is the knowledge and understanding of scientific concepts and processes required for personal decision making, participation in civic and cultural affairs, and economic productivity. It also includes specific types of abilities. In short, the ability to question, to determine answers, to understand and evaluate climate information (at a popular press level), and to appreciate the necessary scientific underpinnings of local, state, national policy and decisions....to appreciate how climate is a part of our larger societal framework. What is Climate Literacy?

3 U.S. Climate Change Science Program Incorporating the US Global Change Research Program and the Climate Change Research Initiative Workforce development (formal ed. yield time – 10 yrs) –(not just science, but resource managers, utilities, architects etc. etc.) Ability to ask the right questions of us as data providers Public support for government expenditure –(e.g. billions of dollars for satellite investments, modeling capabilities) Public understanding of implications of climate research and resulting policy decisions How does climate literacy and climate education intersect with data management?

5 U.S. Climate Change Science Program Incorporating the US Global Change Research Program and the Climate Change Research Initiative CCSP and education activities... The U.S. Climate Change Science Program (CCSP) incorporates the U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP), established by the Global Change Research Act of 1990, and the Bush Administration’s 2001 Climate Change Research Initiative. Vision : A nation and the global community empowered with the science- based knowledge to manage the risks and opportunities of change in the climate and related environmental systems. Mission : Facilitate the creation and application of knowledge of the Earth’s global environment through research, observations, decision support, and communication. Responsibility : Coordinating and integrating scientific research on global variability and change sponsored by 13 participating agencies of the U.S. Government.
