13 September 2006 Global Design Effort 1 ML (x.7) Goals and Scope of Work to end FY09 Nikolay Solyak Fermilab Peter Tenenbaum SLAC

13 September 2006 Global Design Effort 2 Assumptions and scope of work  Big amount of LET work will be done by Americas (Fermilab, SLAC, Cornell). We expect a very significant contribution from Europe, and a nontrivial contribution from Asia in Static/Dynamic Simulation studies.  Scope of work:  Optics and layout of main linac  LET tuning and stabilization simulations  Currently in 2.6, 2.7, and 2.10  In FY08, consolidate all LET sims in x.7  Static tuning  Dynamic tuning These are studies that include the full spectrum of ground motion, power supply jitter, feedbacks on all time scales, and trying to tune up the beamline while all this is happening  Integrated start-to-end simulations  Codes and computing capabilities development  All plans for FY2008 and FY2009 are preliminary

13 September 2006 Global Design Effort 3 Work planned for FY2007 FY2007 will be spent mostly on work related to RDR Lattice and optics design –Work mostly on “engineered ML” (realistic) lattice design (1Q/3CM), which includes: Extra spacing for cryogenic cold boxes Warm sections between cryogenic-units Beam diagnostics in warm section Matching to RTML, undulator section and BDS –Beam Instrumentation BPM resolution diagnostics & location of diagnostic sections Static tuning studies Sensitivity studies Failure mode analysis (BPM, correctors, quads, RF) –Jitter studies (beam/quad position jitter, quad/corrector field jitter) –Development of the static tuning algorithm for ML launch region. Investigate other tuning methods (Kick minimization, Ballistic alignment, Quad shunting, Adaptive alignment)

13 September 2006 Global Design Effort 4 Work planned for FY2007(2) –Start Global bumps tuning studies –Drafting and editing of text for RDR Additional work on: Start dynamic studies –Develop conceptual design and models for intra-train and inter- train Feed-back loops. –Introduce models for ground motion, jitter (RF ampl/phase, power supply, etc.) Code development –Transition to use of CHEF (FNAL) and Lucretia (SLAC) for most LET work –Develop parallel processor computing efforts (grid computing) First look for upgraded 1TeV machine –Lattice design (matching section, diagnostics, etc) –Static Tuning studies

13 September 2006 Global Design Effort 5 Work Planned for FY07 (3) Advanced computing studies for ILC –Financed out of SciDAC – “off the books” as far as ILC budget item is concerned –Main LET goal: Determine the wakefields for a full 3-CM RF unit Time and frequency domain Including misalignments and fabrication errors –Additional goals Wakefields of high-gradient cavities Support design of couplers and HOM loads BDS: collimators, transitions, crab cavities –Start in FY07 –Continues in out years Financed by SciDAC ILC staffers will provide guidance, etc.

13 September 2006 Global Design Effort 6 Goals for FY2008  Complete “Engineered ML” optics More realistic design based on engineering design of the linac components Iterative process with technical/engineering groups - Developing full specifications for all components - Implementing necessary changes for cost minimization/buildability  Develop engineering drawings of certain components/areas Warm section with vacuum components and beam diagnostics  Static/Dynamic tuning continues Iterations with the tuning procedure – review tolerances and performances Move towards “best practices” on independent reproduction of simulation results  Code development continues  Expand simulation / computing facilities

13 September 2006 Global Design Effort 7 Goals for FY2008 (2) Start Integrated Cradle to Grave simulation –full start-to-end (DR-to-IP) LET studies and luminosity prediction Start Machine Protection System (MPS) Studies – with MPS technical group develop strategy and design Start Commissioning Strategy studies – detailed strategy from beam transmission thru linac to reaching luminosity goals Continue study beam dynamics in test facilities –Investigate possibilities to study accelerator physics at relatively small test facilities like Fermilab ILC-ATF with ~20 CM

13 September 2006 Global Design Effort 8 Goals for FY 2009  Lattice design work  Any additional iterations which are required based on engineering studies Final specifications for components, installation tolerances, and tuning performances to achieve design goals Upgrades to 1 TeV machine  Complete Static and Dynamic tuning for ILC TDR  Code development continues CHEF, Lucretia as complete simulation/commissioning tools  Complete Integrated Cradle to Grave simulation Potential to achieve target luminosity  Finalize the Linac commissioning strategy
