What event is all of Christian faith based on? Who shaped the Church and helped it grow after Jesus ascended? What happened on Pentecost? What is the significance of Pentecost to our Catholic faith? Read Acts of the Apostles 2:38 (p. 1173) and in your own words, summarize what Peter told the people they must do to be saved. Why do you think we no longer refer to the Holy Spirit as the Holy Ghost?

Side 1: For nine days, the disciples waited and prayed in Jerusalem as Jesus had told them. Side 2: Mary, his Mother, was with them. Side 1: Suddenly from the sky came a terrific sound, the sound of a strong wind. Side 2: A wonderful wind that roared through the house. Solo 1: And fire appeared, Solo 2: Flaming tongues

Solo 3: That parted and darted, finally to rest on each person. All: (with quiet awe) In wind and fire, the Spirit came and filled the followers of Jesus. Side 2: Filled them with faith, filled them with courage, filled them with knowledge, and filled them with zeal. All: (powerfully) They went forth! Side 1: People who gathered from many lands for the Jewish feast of Pentecost... All: (excitedly) understood the disciples’ words!

Side 2: Some were spellbound, mystified. Side 1: Skeptics sneered, “Too much wine!” Side 2: To which Peter replied, Solo 1: “It’s only nine o’clock. This is God’s work.” Side 1: Then a new, bold Peter proclaimed: Solo 1: (boldly) “Jesus is risen. The Spirit he promised is poured out on us.” All: And 3,000 believed and were baptized.

Side 1: In wind and fire, the Spirit came and filled the followers of Jesus. Side 2: The Holy Spirit brightens and enlightens, Solo 3: creates, and renews. All: The Spirit still comes to fill the followers of Jesus, Side 1: to sweep away sin Side 2: and to set hearts burning. All: (powerfully) Come, Spirit of Jesus, come!

What are the five ways that the early Christian community showed that they were ‘one’? If you had lived in Jerusalem at the time of Pentecost, why might you have wanted to join the Christian community? What are some of the reasons for wanting to belong to the Church today?

Views of the Church proposed by theologian Avery Dulles What is a theologian? How would you symbolize yourself? 1. Institution 2. Mystical Communion 3. Sacrament 4. Herald 5. Servant 6. Community of Disciples

1. Read the quotation (purple box) about the early Christian community and the explanation of your model in your book on pages 18 through 20. 2. Discuss with your partner(s) and think of an example of how the model appears in the Church today. 3. Design a symbol of the model. 4. Prepare a short written report on the model including the example of the model in the Church today, the symbol, the Scripture quotation from the textbook (purple box), another Scripture quote you found on your own, and an explanation of the model. **Each person in the group must record the full report in their notes – you will be teaching the model to the class!

1. Institution: leaders in the church  hierarchy of power and leaders’ roles, power of course comes from God 1. Example: levels of the ordained (Jesus – the founder  the pope  bishops and cardinals  priests and deacons  us 2. Mystical Communion: people of one heart, one mind  diverse family of love and support 1. Example: people of one parish being diverse 3. Sacrament: outward sign of inward grace 1. Example: sacraments of initiation, healing, service of communion: seven sacraments total (baptism, confirmation, etc) 4. Herald: messenger sent to communicate the Good News 1. Example: we are called to spread the word of God worldwide 5. Servant: serving with love and kindness 1. Example: the washing of the feet, following Jesus’s example because he is the Suffering Servant (came not to be served, but to serve) 6. Community of Disciples: being a follower of Jesus, our one and true leader 1. Example: leaders who help us follow in his footsteps

1. Institution: structure and order of the church, organization guided by the Holy Spirit and supports living relationship with God  hierarchy of power that comes from God 1. Example: Pope at the head (Bishop of Rome)  bishops and cardinals  priests and deacons  us 2. Mystical Communion: social group bound together by our will to serve God; united in the Eucharist; DIVERSITY of members and functions 1. Example: members of the Church united by our beliefs – we receive the Eucharist each week 3. Sacrament: religious ceremony of the Church; outward sign of inward grace 1. Example: the Eucharist – “do this in remembrance of me” 4. Herald: a messenger sent to announce something, proclaiming the Word of God 1. Example: preachers/priests/pastors spreading the Good News at Mass 5. Servant: a person who serves God on Earth; Jesus came not to be served, but to serve  the Suffering Servant (dies on the cross for us)  called to serve our brothers and sisters in Christ the way Jesus served us 1. Example: someone dedicating his or her life to serving Christ (Pope); serving food to the poor 6. Community of Disciples: everyone has a role in the community in his/her devotion to Jesus; imitating Jesus’s actions 1. Example: Praying, following in Jesus’s footsteps

1. Institution: levels of the ordained (pope  bishops  priests/deacons) 2. Mystical Communion: diverse family of love and support 3. Sacrament: outward sign of inward grace 4.
