Intro to Sports Medicine Mrs. Frasca ANATOMY OF THE HEART

 To circulate blood around the body  Blood delivers oxygen, nutrients, and transports waste  All body systems are dependent on the heart HEART FUNCTION

 Four Chambers: -Right Atrium -Right Ventricle -Left Atrium -Left Ventricle BASIC ANATOMY: CHAMBERS

 Heart Valves open and close allowing blood to flow to the appropriate places at the appropriate times  Heart Valves (4):  Tricuspid  Pulmonary valve  Mitral or Bicuspid  Aortic BASIC ANATOMY: VALVES

 Nodes comprised of specialized tissue that contain both muscle and nervous tissue and are part of the Cardiac conduction system!  Two Nodes of the heart:  Sinoatrial Node (SA node)  Coordinates contractions by sending Electrical impulses that travel through the walls of the heart to make it contract.  Atrioventricular Node (AV node)  Receives electrical signal from SA node and delays it for about a 10 th of a second then relays the ectrical signals to the atrioventricular bundle to deliver an impulse to the rest of the heart. BASIC ANATOMY: NODES

 1.Superior & Inferior Vena Cava  2. Right Atrium Tricuspid valve  3. Right Ventricle Pulmonary Valve  4. Pulmonary Arteries  5. LUNGS!  6. Left pulmonary veins  7. Left Atrium Mitral Valve  8. Left Ventricle aortic valve ascending aorta -  OUT TO THE BODY! DIRECTION OF BLOOD FLOW

Blood Flow: DRAW AND LABEL ACTIVITY!

 Lub Dub  BICUSPID & TRICUSPID  VALVES CLOSING = LUB  PULMONARY & AORTIC  VALVES CLOSING = DUB  What are Doctors Listening For?  Two clicking sounds each beat as valves shut at two different times each beat. Extra clicks and whooshing sounds suggest that valve system is not sealing correctly and is malfunctioning! HEART SOUNDS

 HEART DISEASE: narrowing of the small blood vessels that supply oxygen to the heart– fatty plaque build up in the blood stream  HEART MURMER: a low grade sound that is caused by insufficient blood flow through the heart  HEART ATTACK: occurs when blood flow to a part of your heart is blocked for a long enough time that the part of the heart muscle is damaged or dies HEART PROBLEMS
