REFERENCE: Training Manual Node-to-Surface Elements (8-16) Beam Tip Contact Workshop 12 Node-to-Surface Elements

Workshop Supplement October 15, 2001 Inventory # 001568 W12-2 Purpose Demonstrate using the node-to-surface contact elements to simulate beam tip contact Goal Create 2D node-to-surface contact elements, solve the large deflection contact analysis, and post-process the results Model Description Cantilever beams Applied tip displacement 12.Node-to-Surface Elements Beam Tip Contact constant cross-section beam length = 100 inches E = 30E6 PSI 1/2 inch square cross-section 30 inches applied vertical displacement 10 inches

Workshop Supplement October 15, 2001 Inventory # 001568 W12-3 12.Node-to-Surface Elements …Beam Tip Contact STEPS TO FOLLOW: 1.Start an ANSYS Interactive session in the working directory specified by the instructor using “node-to-surface” as the jobname 2.Resume the NODE-TO-SURFACE database –Utility Menu > File > Resume from Select “node-to-surface.db1” [OK] –OR enter the following command: RESUME, node-to-surface, db1 NOTE: The node-to-surface.db1 database contains the completed geometry, material, boundary condition, and loading definitions for this finite element model.

Workshop Supplement October 15, 2001 Inventory # 001568 W12-4 12.Node-to-Surface Elements …Beam Tip Contact 3.Add 2D node-to-surface contact element type –Main Menu > Preprocessor > Element Type > Add/Edit/Delete… [Add…] Contact 2D pt-to-surf 48 Element type reference number = 2 [OK] [Close] –OR enter the following commands: /PREP7 ET, 2, CONTAC48

Workshop Supplement October 15, 2001 Inventory # 001568 W12-5 12.Node-to-Surface Elements …Beam Tip Contact 4.Specify the contact stiffness –Main Menu > Preprocessor > Real Constants > Add/Edit/Delete… [Add…] Type 2 CONTAC48 [OK] Real Constant Set No. = 2 Normal contact stiffness KN = 30E5 [OK] [Close] –OR enter the following command: R, 2, 30E5 NOTE: Stiffness estimated as k=f(bend) X E/10. Using f(bend)=1 gives k = 1 X 30E6 / 10 = 30E5.

Workshop Supplement October 15, 2001 Inventory # 001568 W12-6 12.Node-to-Surface Elements …Beam Tip Contact 5.Select the contact node –Utility Menu > Select > Entities… Nodes By Num/Pick Choose “From Full” [OK] Pick node number 2 [OK] –OR enter the following command: NSEL,,,, 2 6.Create the contact nodal component –Utility Menu > Select > Comp/Assembly > Create Component… Component name = CONTACT Component is made of = Nodes [OK] –OR enter the following command: CM, CONTACT, NODE Pick node number 2

Workshop Supplement October 15, 2001 Inventory # 001568 W12-7 12.Node-to-Surface Elements …Beam Tip Contact 7.Select the target surface nodes –Utility Menu > Select > Entities… Nodes By Num/Pick Choose “From Full” [OK] Select nodes in bottom beam as shown (21 total) [OK] –OR enter the following command: NSEL,,,, 22, 42 8.Create the target nodal component –Utility Menu > Select > Comp/Assembly > Create Component… Component name = TARGET Component is made of = Nodes [OK] –OR enter the following command: CM, TARGET, NODE

Workshop Supplement October 15, 2001 Inventory # 001568 W12-8 12.Node-to-Surface Elements …Beam Tip Contact 9.Select all entities –Utility Menu > Select > Everything –OR enter the following command: ALLSEL, ALL 10. Set the element attributes –Main Menu > Preprocessor > Create > Elements > Elem Attributes… Element type number = 2 CONTAC48 Real constant set number = 2 [OK] –OR enter the following commands: TYPE, 2 REAL, 2

Workshop Supplement October 15, 2001 Inventory # 001568 W12-9 12.Node-to-Surface Elements …Beam Tip Contact 11.Create the node-to-surface contact elements with the components defined –Main Menu > Preprocessor > Create > Elements > Node to Surf… Contactor node component = CONTACT Target surf node compon = TARGET Target surface = Top surface [OK] –OR enter the following command: GCGEN, CONTACT, TARGET,,, TOP

Workshop Supplement October 15, 2001 Inventory # 001568 W12-10 12.Node-to-Surface Elements …Beam Tip Contact 12.Specify “Basic” solution control options –Main Menu > Solution > Sol’n Control… Select tab: “Basic” Analysis Options = Large Displacement Static Time at end of loadstep = 30 Number of substeps = 30 Max no. of substeps = 300 Min no. of substeps = 30 All solution items Frequency: Write every substep [OK] –OR enter the following commands: /SOLUTION NLGEOM, ON TIME, 30 NSUBST, 30, 300, 30 OUTRES, ALL, ALL Note: “Time” for this analysis is equal to the total applied displacement.
