This Week in English 11 March 21 - 25, 2011

Monday We’ll grade & turn in the “To Build a Fire” tests & talk briefly about the story. Then we’ll get some info about Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce journey, and you’ll read what he said at the end of it. Write out your answers to Literary Elements, #1, 2 to turn in today. HOMEWORK: Begin the Willa Cather story, “A Wagner Matinee” on page 530. You’ll have time in class tomorrow to read, too, and your quiz will be Wednesday in class. March 21, 2011

Tuesday Time to read the Willa Cather story. HOMEWORK: Quiz over the Willa Cather story is Wednesday. Spend some time gathering & examining sources to get an accurate feel for the extent of the problem. March 22, 2011

Wednesday Quiz over “A Wagner Matinee” by Willa Cather. Then we’ll read “We Wear the Mask” by Paul Laurence Dunbar. HOMEWORK: Locate “Sympathy,” another poem by Dunbar. Read it at least twice. March 23, 2011

Thursday Several class members will read us the poem “Sympathy” aloud. We’ll talk about how hearing it affects our experience of the poem. And we’ll get started on Edgar Lee Masters’ poems. HOMEWORK: Read Literary Elements, page 500, write out answers to #1, 2. Due Friday. March 24, 2011

Friday We’ll look at several more of Masters’ poems from his Spoon River Anthology. HOMEWORK: Write a poem à la Masters – a dead person speaks to the living about his/her life. No rhyme, specific details about his/her life, “lesson” in last couple of lines. Rough draft due Tuesday, 3/29. March 25, 2011
