8 Prime Minister Parliament He is in charge of the day-to-day operations of the government. The Prime Minister can dissolve members of Parliament. Parliament (MPs) selects the Prime Minister. MPs can vote to elect a new Prime Minister. Parliament is elected by the citizens. MPs make laws for the Country.

11 Parliamentary System History In the past, a seat in the House of Lords was passed down through aristocratic families. This was an autocratic government. Today, Lords are elected by the House or are appointed by the monarch.

14 Prime Minister’s Appointment After the general election, the leader of the political party with the most members in the House of Commons is asked by the queen to become prime minister.

15 Monarch The queen is the official head of state. She is a symbol of the country. Also called “the Crown” Her role is mostly ceremonial. Her role is restricted by the Constitution of the U.K.
