Status and Highlights of the Applied Superconductivity Center 2008-2011 ASC established itself as a fully functioning center within the MagLab Raised $9M in external funds, published 130 papers, employed ~25 undergrads, ~10 grad students, 7 postdocs Worked with MS&T to write proposal to NSF to fund an all- superconducting 32 T user magnet (awarded 2009) Greatly expanded the accessible FSU electron microscopy facilities, first with HRSEM/FIB and now with atomic resolution cold-FEG JEOL ARM200F analytical STEM as of summer 2010, mid-point in current award period

LTS Materials Niobium for superconducting RF cavities 100% externally funded program at center of a large multilab collaboration to understand fundamental breakdown mechanisms of Nb cavities (Fermi, Jlab, IIT, NWU, Chicago, MSU) Nb 3 Sn 100% externally funded program in the center of a large multilab collaboration (DOE-HEP labs, ITER-France) extending from nanoscale microstructure focus to fracture behavior of full ITER cables (collaboration with Twente – large undergrad, grad, postdoc program Status and Highlights of the Applied Superconductivity Center

as of summer 2010, mid-point in current award period Cuprate Conductors and Coils 2212 Core support leveraged a major ARRA multilab program (VHFSMC). Provides basic understanding of how to process round wire 2212 conductors and coils. YBCO Leverage small core conductor support for 4K properties in support of the magnet program to continue major part of US national YBCO program addressing fundamental issues of vortex pinning and current-blocking mechanisms in conductors by Grain boundaries and other process defects both experimentally and theoretically. Status and Highlights of the Applied Superconductivity Center

as of summer 2010, mid-point in current award period Pnictides Made intensive investigations of the upper critical field, anisotropy and grain boundary properties of multiple classes of the new Fe-As superconductors We had a key early Nature paper on the multi-band high field properties We made targets for the first bicrystal thin films and showed, sadly, that pnictide GBs are electromagnetically granular, rather like cuprates Hellstrom has just received an NSF grant to study phase relationships in the system, an essential step to cleaning up synthesis and perhaps helping make polycrystalline pnictides less electromagnetically granular Developed a very wide range of collaborators supported by excellent undergrad and postdoc researchers Status and Highlights of the Applied Superconductivity Center

as of summer 2010, mid-point in current award period Magnets & Magnet Technology Collaborations, especially with MS&T 2212 – clarified and extended knowledge of the key parameters defining coil performance, achieved 32 T performance, at least 20 layer coils and defined other problems such as latent heat and chemical thermo-mechanical interactions with insulation and structural material that hold back coil performance (Ulf Trociewitz lead) YBCO - obtained the highest field small coils (34T), identified ability to work at Lorentz Force induced stress up to 760 MPa, showed that layer wound coils work for even 14 mm ID coils, alternative quench concepts being studied (work in collaborations with MS&T and SuperPower) Status and Highlights of the Applied Superconductivity Center

ASC Vision for 2017 in collaboration especially with MS&T as of summer 2010, mid-point in current award period SRF – to have understood how to get ideal performance in Nb cavities first tests of Gurevich multilayer approach to making higher gradient cavities Nb 3 Sn – all interesting problems will have been resolved and it will have attained the status of Nb-Ti 2212 – aim to have all superconducting >30T magnets of 2212 with Jc at least twice as high as present YBCO – fully understand the 4 K, high field performance envelope of still-evolving coated conductors, reduce intrinsic and Jc anisotropy and apply insights from study of 2212 GBs to engineer better GBs in YBCO with view towards a round wire YBCO conductor Will have developed understanding and relevant instrumentation to understand HTS conductors at all relevant lenght scales from the nanoscale to the magnet length scale Pnictides or other new materials – will observe the opportunities for technology of these or newer materials concentrating especially on anisotropy, high field properties and GB properties Magnets – define the ability of HTS conductors to approach the grand challenge of a 50 T all superconducting solenoid Support MagLab wide efforts on follow on to 32 T, going for 30 T NMR and 40T + user magnets

Coils, R&D Test Beds HTS Magnet Systems Conductors The key to doing superconducting magnets right: Conductors and magnets
