1 Library of Congress Classification System Patti Henderson Library Media Specialist Sanford Middle School

2 Library of Congress Classification As with the Dewey Decimal Classification System, each book is assigned it’s own call number and books on the same subject are shelved together. Unlike the Dewey Decimal Classification System, the call number is determined by the author’s name as well as the subject matter of the material.

3 Library of Congress Classification Just like with the Dewey Decimal Classification System, call numbers are printed on the spine of each book and recorded in the online catalog.

8 Library of Congress Call Numbers Contain lots of information.

9 Library of Congress Shelving Order Notice all items are in the same category and subject (BF and 1078) and shelved together. They are then shelved alphabetically by the author’s last name (.A7 then.F72 then.H23 …) If two items have the same author and number, those items will be shelved by date of publication (last line of call number)
