B.Sc. Multimedia Computing3D Modelling and Animation Welcome to 3D Modelling & Animation UFCEKT-20-3

Module Presentation Lectures and Tutorials Overviews and Demonstrations Software Maya Version 2013 MotionBuilder Version 2013 Adobe Premiere

Assessment Two Assignments Modelling and Animation Assignment (35%) Character Animation Assignment (35%) Exam (30%)

Book List Art of Maya (Sybex) ISBN 1-894893-13-1 Abgridged version Available from the module homepage Maya 7 Foundation (Sybex) ISBN 1-894893-74-3 See the module homepage Getting Started with Maya 2011 Tutorials and Support Files Available from the module homepage

Getting Started with Maya 2013 Work through the tutorials in the following order: Section Two: Maya Basics: Lessons 1 to 4 Section Three: Polygon Modelling: Lesson 1 Section Four: NURBS Modelling: Lessons 1 to 3 Section Five: Subdivision Surfaces: Lesson 1 Section Six: Animation: Lessons 1 to 5 Section Seven will be covered in the second semester Section Eight: Polygon Texturing: Lesson 1 Section Nine: Rendering: Lessons 1 to 5 Section Ten: Dynamics: Lessons 1 and 2 Sections on using Paint effects and MEL (Maya Embedded Language - a scripting language) will be covered in the second semester. Spend about 8 - 12 hours on working through these tutorials to give you a good introduction to Maya.

Typical Features of 3D Modelling Environments Interface with several orthographic views + perspective view Creation of mesh primitives Applying materials and textures Creation of lights and cameras to view the scene Animation of models, lights, cameras Character construction and animation Integration of sound and other media ( video) Importing de-facto standard mesh models e.g.3ds Exporting to de-facto formats e.g..3ds.fbx Application of cinematic effects and physics modelling

Four views of model showing alternative shading in each viewport: wireframe (top left), full shading (top right), flat shading (bottom left), wireframe on shaded (bottom right).

Biped character with skeletal rig (hidden) ready for animation inside Maya or export to character animation studio.

Animation Keyframe Animation Key (important) frames are set in model scene Animation is interpolated between set keyframes Inverse Kinematics Animated components have inverted hierarchy which respond to each connected components movement in a predefined expected way. Motion Capture Motion is recorded by optical systems attached to people carrying out particular human movement and activities. Motion capture data is digitised and then applied to characters in the modelling environment via popular motion capture file formats such as.bvh

Motion Capture Character Studio in 3D Studio MAX using the Biped animation technology Maya uses an external environment called Motion Builder to apply motion capture data to characters. Animated characters then taken back into the Maya environment for integration and editing

Character with pose inside MotionBuilder Environment MotionBuilder

Particle and Motion Effects Particle systems Smoke and vapour Combustion Waves Hair and cloth

3D Software Applications Days of Yore 3D Studio (MSDOS) (Autodesk) Povray (Open Source) Maya (cross platform) AutoDesk 3D Studio Max (PC) AutoDesk Softimage ( PC & Linux) Autodesk Cinema4D (PC & Mac) Life Forms ( PC) Others including Truespace & Blender

Additional Resources Autodesk ‘The Area’ – register… 3dbuzz.com (vast amount of video training (VT) resources – register… 3DCafe and many others – research! Online module and texture resources – see the link at the bottom of the module homepage – logon required userid : password :

Autodesk Student Licences Autodesk currently provides three-year licences for students. Register with your UWE email at: http://students.autodesk.com (there is a link on the programme homepage) Once registered you can access a range of free software including Maya, MotionBuilder and many other industry-standard software applications.
