3  No one had regulated what the trusts (groups that control an entire industry) did  They cut prices to get rid of competition.  Later, raised prices (and profits!)  Passed Sherman Anti-Trust Act in 1890  Made it illegal for companies to gain control of an industry to forming trusts.  Enforced by Theodore Roosevelt when he became president in 1901  He got rid of all the trusts!

5  Alerted Americans to the unsanitary conditions of the meat-packing industry  Led to an investigation of the industry  Created the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act to protect consumers

6  Labor unions grew and demanded better conditions  Samuel Gompers was a major leader as founder of the American Federation of Labor  Used strikes to get demands met  Promoted minimum wage laws  Passed at the state level  Limited working hours  Passed at the state level  Targeted to help women, children and men in dangerous jobs only.  Helped the unemployed  Accomplished by individuals

7  Jane Addams and others created hull houses- group homes in city slums to help poor urban residents  Provides information to new immigrants  Helped the unemployed find jobs  Developed education centers for residents  Created neighborhood health clinics  Ran citizenship classes
