Measuring Development Objective: To compare the development of a selection of countries To compare the development of several countries using a range of indicators Outcome: I have calculated GDP per capita of a selection of countries. I can use a range of development indicators to decide how developed a country is Homework: Create a poster using development information one country. Include a paragraph stating how developed the country is and why. Starter activity: Read ‘What do you want out of life’ story What is the message of the story.

GDP per capita GDP = Gross Domestic Product Total value of goods and services a country produces in a year. Given in US$ GDP per capita What each person in the country would earn if this amount were shared out equally (it never is!) Objective: To compare the development of a selection of countries

Which country has a higher GDP per capita? UKJapan GDP ($ millions) 100 Population (millions) 5020 Objective: To compare the development of a selection of countries

The table shows the GDP figures from a number of different countries around the world. GDP is a measure in $US and it tells us how much money that country makes in a year. 1.Rank them. Give the country that makes the most money 1, the country that makes the 2nd most money 2 and so on. 2.Are you surprised at your results? What could explain this? 3.Use this sum to work out the GDP per capita for each of the countries on the table using the same formula: GDP per Capita = GDP/Total Population 4.Now rank this new list from the richest to the poorest. 5.Is it the same as the first ranking you did? If not why? 6.Is GDP per capita a better measure than GDP? Explain your answer. 7.What might be wrong with using a country’s wealth only to measure development? What other indicators of development could you use? Objective: To compare the development of a selection of countries

Plenary What might be wrong with using a country’s wealth only to measure development? What other indicators of development could you use? How does this relate to the story you read at the start of the lesson? Objective: To compare the development of a selection of countries

Top Trumps cards 1.In groups of 4 2.Choose 6 development indicators from atlas 3.Choose 4 countries each 4.Complete cards 5.Play Top Trumps! See me for instructions! Ghana GNP per capita $ Doctors per 100,000 Adult literacy % Death rate Life expectancy Food intake (calories) Objective: To compare the development of several countries using a range of indicators

Top Trumps feedback 1.Which was the most developed country and how could you tell? 2.Which was the least developed country and how can you tell? 3.Has the game taught you more about development that GDP alone and why? 4.Why is it important to use a range of development indicators? 5.How developed is Ghana compared to other countries? Objective: To compare the development of several countries using a range of indicators

Outcomes Level 5 Can calculate GDP of a selection of countries. Can give one reason why using a range of indicators is useful. Level 6 Can calculate GDP per capita of a selection of countries. Can explain why range of indicators better way to measure development. Level 7 Can evaluate usefulness of using GDP vs GDP per Capita data Can evaluate the usefulness of each type of development indicator Objective: To compare the development of a selection of countries

Extension task Page 12 and 13 – look at the pictures Answer question 2 in your book Then… Question 4 and 5
