3 Aims and Objectives Aims – Cover very basic coaching ideas – Provide confidence in planning/ running sessions Objectives – Give some session ideas – Provide a framework for basic sessions – Cover some techniques

4 Presentation and Position Presentation – Prepare – Equipment – Have a back up plan Position – Pool side - Not in the water!

6 Types of Session 3 Types of session (though there are more) – Endurance – Speed – Technique Swim / Lifesaving / Other Work to time rather than distance Set session objectives

7 Endurance Relevant for beach lifeguard/ Superlifesaver? Low intensity Large time differences between groups – Create streaming and adjust (4K/hr for top down to 1K total for weak)

8 Speed Relevant for most lifesaving High intensity Low spread of time – Mixed ability lanes – Max 100m Train with Fins/ Manikins/ People

9 Technique 1 - Lifesaving Towing Finning Obstacles Train to the rules Train under stressful conditions

10 Technique 2 – Other techniques Rope throw – Double coiling – Pulling in Heads up swimming

11 Warm up Why warm up? – Avoid Injury – To get body ready for session Make the warm up relevant – Body parts – Speed Make the warm up progressive – Start slow, raise heartrate – Move up intensity

12 Drills 1 – Swimming drills Pyramid sets Mixed styles (IM/Towing etc) Gliding Catch up Kickboards / pull buoys Fists

13 Drills 2 – Lifesaving drills Manikin Pick up 3 way tow Obstacles within warm up Race sections

15 Resources Build a resource pack for yourself – S&S manual – Folder Magazine articles Learn anatomy, physiology, nutrition and psychology – Books – Talk to people

16 Dynamic Apnoea What is it? Why might you train it? What are the risks? – How do you risk assess? Safer ways to train – No hyperventilating/ packing – Breathing patterns in surface swimming – Train to relax
