1 Earth’s Cycles of Matter
Biology Unit 1 Chapter 3-3

2 Vocabulary Atmosphere Biosphere Geosphere Hydrosphere

3 Cycles of Matter In one direction – it is a one-way flow
How do biological systems move energy? In one direction – it is a one-way flow How do biological systems move matter? Matter is recycled Biological systems do not use matter, they TRANSFORM it.

4 Cycles of Matter When an ecosystem is limited by a single nutrient.
CYCLE: A group of processes in which matter and energy move What is a LIMITING NUTRIENT? When an ecosystem is limited by a single nutrient. Examples: Nitrogen – Farmer’s fields / algal ocean blooms

5 Carbon Cycle: Needed as a fuel for life processes.
Nitrogen Cycle: Used to build proteins in cells. Phosphorous Cycle: To build cells. Water Cycle: Changes in form of water.

6 The Carbon Cycle Carbon Cycle
To Atmosphere (air): Burning fossil fuel, volcanoes, fires, respiration To Geosphere (earth): Decomposition of organic matter To Biosphere (organisms): Photosynthesis, eating To Hydrosphere (ocean): Photosynthesis, eating, runoff

7 The Carbon Cycle Nitrogen Cycle
To Atmosphere: Burning fossil fuel, denitrification To Geosphere: Nitrogen fixation (bacteria & lightning), fertilizer To Biosphere: Eating, bacteria fixation To Hydrosphere: Runoff, leaching

8 The Carbon Cycle Phosphorous Cycle To Atmosphere: DOESN’T HAPPEN
To Geosphere: Runoff, dissolves in water, decomposers To Biosphere: Eating, absorb through roots To Hydrosphere: Runoff, leaching

9 The Carbon Cycle To Atmosphere: Evaporation, transpiration
To Geosphere: Precipitation, condensation, infiltration To Biosphere: Drinking, absorbed through roots To Hydrosphere: Runoff, leaching
