4 Air Conditioning System Operations Overview The air conditioning (A/C) process involves controlling air temperatures within an enclosed living environment. The basic process has been used for centuries. As technology evolved, inventors learned to use electricity, fans, refrigerants, and compressed gas to create more efficient A/C systems. 4 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2013. 5 Air Conditioning System Operations Theory of air conditioning systems- A/C systems operate on two basic thermodynamic laws. The 1 st law states energy (i.e., heat, etc.) cannot be created or destroyed, only changed from one state (solid, liquid, gas) to another. The 2 nd law states heat always flows from and area of high temperature to an area of low temperature (heat transfer). By creating a mechanical system to control heat transfer, we create our modern day A/C systems. 5 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2013. All rights reserved.
