WHAT’S YOUR MINDSET?

________ Class Survey Results StatementAgreeDisagree 3. People are born with a certain amount of intelligence so some people grow up smarter than others. 9. You can learn new things, but you really can’t change how smart you are inside. 10. You can become more and more intelligent the more you learn.

Two Ways of Thinking If you have a FIXED MINDSET You think that intelligence and ability cannot be changed. You feel like some people are just smarter than others. You might think that having to try hard at something means that you are not smart enough. If you have a GROWTH MINDSET You believe that intelligence and ability can be changed through effort. You think that people can get smarter as they learn more. You understand that trying hard is the way to improve your abilities or intelligence.

Why is your mindset important? People with different mindsets experience the world in very different ways. Your mindset has a HUGE effect on how successful you are in school. You can CHANGE a fixed mindset into a growth mindset…starting today!

Bob has a fixed mindset. He doesn’t think that he is smart and he doubts that he can get any smarter. Maria has a growth mindset. She understands that she will get smarter the more she works and learns. How do they react differently to everyday school situations? Bob avoids challenges because he is worried about looking dumb. When work gets hard, he sometimes gives up. When school work gets challenging… Maria can be frustrated by hard work, but she keeps at it because she knows that she learns more from challenges. When a teacher gives feedback on an assignment… Bob hears it like criticism and feels bad about himself. He can’t use the feedback to improve his work. Maria knows that she can improve so she uses the feedback to show her how to get better. When test scores or grades come out… If Bob gets a low score, it supports his sense that he is not smart enough. He can’t help comparing himself to others. A low score tells Maria that she needs to work harder or try different strategies. She competes against her own personal best.

Intelligence vs. Effort It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer. Albert Einstein

Mindset and Failure Have you ever failed at anything? How did you react? How do people with the fixed mindset react to difficult work, criticism, or failure? How do people with the growth mindset react to failure? Famous Failures: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yetHqWODp0http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yetHqWODp0 http://www.mindsetworks.com/webnav/videogallery.aspx Michael Jordan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45mMioJ5szchttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45mMioJ5szc

I’ve missed more than nine thousand shots in my career. I’ve lost almost three hundred games. Twenty-six times, I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot, and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life, and that is why I succeed. Michael Jordan

So, what can you do…? Let go of fixed mindset ideas about yourself and other people. Put in your full effort so you will get smarter and better at doing things. Make mistakes and learn from them. Even failure is a learning opportunity. Don’t be afraid to ask a teacher or classmate for help when work is difficult.
