1 Momentum Momentum = mass x velocity ( Kgm/s ) (kg) (m/s) If an object is moving towards you, your safety will depend on * how massive the object is * how fast the object is moving You would step out of the way of a lorry, but not even notice a fly at the same speed! Since velocity is a vector ( it has direction as well as magnitude), momentum is also a vector quantity. or: p = m x v

2 Momentum = mass x velocity momentum massvelocity Example 1: Calculate the momentum of a 50 kg runner travelling at 12 m/s. p = m x v p = 50 x 12 p = 600 kgm/s Example 2: Calculate the momentum of a 0.01 kg bullet travelling at 500 m/s. p = m x v p = 0.01 x 500 p = 5 kgm/s

3 Momentum = mass x velocity momentum massvelocity Example 3: Calculate the mass of a car travelling at 20 m/s ( about 45mph) if its momentum is 10,000 kgm/s. m = p v m = 10000 20 m = 500 kg p mv
