1 Energy Flow *Energy Roles:
1. Producer – an organism that can make its own food. Examples = plants, algae 2. Consumer – an organism that must eat other organisms for ENERGY (4 types)

2 4 Types of Consumers: 1. Herbivores –
consumers that only eat plants = 1st level consumer 2. Omnivores – consumers that eat both plants and animals = 1st, 2nd or 3rd level consumers

3 3. Carnivores – consumers that only eat other animals = 2nd or 3rd level consumers 4. Scavengers – carnivores that eat dead animals =2nd or 3rd level consumers Examples: Vultures, crabs, catfish

4 Energy Roles (continued)
3. Decomposers – an organism that breaks down wastes and dead organisms and returns the raw materials back to the environment. Examples: Bacteria, molds, fungi (mushrooms)

5  Shows energy is transferred to next organism.
#4. Food Chains Food Chain – a series of events in which one organism eats another to gain ENERGY. Producer  1st level consumer  2nd level consumer  3rd level consumer.  Shows energy is transferred to next organism. Tree -> Ant -> Bird -> Cat

6 Food Webs #5. A food web consists of many overlapping food chains.

7 Energy Pyramid A diagram that shows the amount of energy available to producers and consumers at different levels.

8 FOOD IS ENERGY Energy is used to grow, move, reproduce and other functions. Energy is used AND lost every time we eat food.

9 1. What are the 1st level consumers. 2
