Enzymes

sub- “under, below” Word that start with “sub” PictureSentence

Science Fact of the Day: The fungus Cordyceps is able to "mind-control" other insects like ants to climb plants and attach there to become its food.

Objective : The objective of class today is to understand what enzymes are and how they work.

Enzyme Introduction

Enzymes Notes A. Some chemical reactions are too slow B. A catalyst speeds up the rate of chemical reactions. I. Enzymes

C. Enzymes are proteins that speed up chemical reactions that take place in cells. 1. Enzymes act as catalysts 2. Enzymes are specific and only speed up one reaction 3. Enzymes are named after what they react with Ex: Alcohol dehydrogenase (an enzyme that takes water out of alcohol).

The Enzyme Lingo Enzyme: a protein that speeds up chemical reactions Catalyst: substance that speeds up the rate of a chemical reaction Substrate: the substances that reacts with the enzyme Active Site: place where the substrate bonds to the enzyme Enzyme-Substrate Complex: substance formed when the enzyme and substrate bond together (the “reactant” in the reaction…remember reactants and products?)

D. Enzymes: 1.regulate chemical reactions 2.make materials that cells need 3.release energy 4. transfer information.

E. Enzymes work best under certain internal conditions. F. Enzymes help maintain homeostasis in living organisms.

Enzymes lower the activation energy and speed up the rate at which a reaction is completed.

A more scientific way to look at activation energy

Draw, color, and label this diagram Enzyme animation

Bellwork: FINISH THE Enzyme/Substrate Activity: Design your own connecting puzzle pieces to demonstrate an enzyme and substrate. Color them and label the following: enzyme substrate enzyme-substrate complex Then fill in the following analogy: Enzymes are like______ because__________. Substrates are like ________ because_________. They fit together like _______ and _______.

CO: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the structure and function of proteins LO: The student will record answers to a quiz and examine Latin roots

Today’s agenda: Today will be an independent work day. Reminder, that means no talking. 1.Take your quiz. When your done raise your hand to turn it in. 2.Work on the Language of Science worksheet independently. 3.After your quiz (while you’re working) I’ll call you up to show you your grades.
