Row 1, Col 1 What is a mineral? It is solid and has never been alive. It has these three properties: hardness shape color

1,2 It is made of minerals. What is a rock?

1,3 Rock that was once melted but has cooled and hardened. What is igneous rock?

1,4 Something that has lasted from a living thing that died long ago. What is a fossil?

2,1 The hardest mineral. What is diamond?

2,2 The thin outer layer of Earth. It is the part we have seen. What is the crust?

2,3 What is sedimentary rock? Rock that forms from material that has settled into layers. The layers are squeezed together until they harden into rock.

2,4 The shape of a plant or animal left in sediments when the rock formed. What is a mold?

3,1 It is dark and dull. The “lead” in a pencil is made of this mineral. What is graphite?

3,2 The middle layer of Earth. The crust sits on it. What is the mantle?

3,3 What is metamorphic rock? 1 Igneous, sedimentary, or other metamorphic rock that has been changed by heat and pressure.

3,4 An animal who became extinct long before there were any scientists to study them. What is a dinosaur?

4,1 It is a common mineral. It is almost as hard as diamond. What is quartz?

4,2 The center of the Earth. It is made of very hot iron. What is the core?

4,3 The process of changing one rock into other types. What is the rock cycle?

4,4 People who studied the fossil bones of dinosaurs to find out about them. Who are scientists?

5,1 This mineral is so soft that you can write with it. What is chalk?

5,2 The three types of rock. What are igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic?

5,3 What are wind and water? These two things can break up igneous rocks to form sedimentary rocks.

5,4 What is a cast? It forms when mud or minerals fill a mold. It has the exact shape of the animal that made the mold.
