TOPIC 1.3 INTRODUCTION TO NETWORKING

Router – A netwok interconnection device & associated software that links two networks. The networks being linked can be diffrerent, but they must use a common routing protocol. Switch – A device that links device such as computers, terminals, printers & provides a mechanism to connect one device to another & communicate directly. Bridge – a device that connects two similar network together.

Wireless Access Point - a device that allows wireless devices to connect to a wired network using Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or related standards. What is Mobile Base Station & its functions?

Network Interface Card NICs provide computers with a connection to the network & it's also handle an important data-conversion function. Each computer on the network, including the servers, is required to have one.

Types of NIC Card: Those that are installed on an expansion board inside a computer. PCI NIC PCI Express NIC

Those are installed to the computer's bus externally: - PCMCIA Adapter, USB Port, FireWire, Compact Flash NIC. On-board NIC - Usually an ethernet port and modem jack are provided into the motherboard. Wireless NIC - is a network interface controller which connects to a radio- based. This card uses an antenna to communicate through microwaves.just like other NICs, works on the Layer 1 and Layer 2 of the OSI Model. network interface controllerradioantennamicrowavesOSI Model

Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) A network of computers that behave as if they are connected to the same wire even though they may actually be physically located on different segments of a LAN.

Advantages of VLAN - One of the biggest advantages of VLANs is that when a computer is physically moved to another location, it can stay on the same VLAN without any hardware reconfiguration. - Broadcast Control:a large LAN to smaller VLANs we can reduce broadcast traffic as each broadcast will be sent on to the relevant VLAN only.

- Security: VLANs provide enhanced network security. In a VLAN network environment, with multiple broadcast domains, network administrators have control over each port and user. - Cost: Segmenting a large VLAN to smaller VLANs is cheaper than creating a routed network with routers because normally routers costlier than switches.
