Use a Problem-Solving Plan COURSE 3 LESSON 1-2 A sculpture is 5 ft tall and sits on a stand that makes an overall height of 8 ft. A plaque is placed 2 ft above the top of the stand on the wall next to the statue. At what height is the plaque? Determine what you know and what you need to find out. A 5-ft statue is on top of a stand. The overall height is 8 ft. There is a plaque on the wall, 2 ft above the stand. The goal is to find the height of the plaque. 1-2

Use a Problem-Solving Plan COURSE 3 LESSON 1-2 (continued) Choose a strategy. Draw a diagram to help you understand the relationship between the heights of the statue, stand, and the plaque. 1-2

Use a Problem-Solving Plan COURSE 3 LESSON 1-2 (continued) To find the height of the plaque first calculate the height of the stand. overall height – height of statue 8 ft – 5 ft = 3 ft The plaque is 2 ft above the top of the stand. Add 2 ft to the height of the stand. 3 ft + 2 ft = 5 ft The height of the plaque is 5 ft. 1-2

Use a Problem-Solving Plan COURSE 3 LESSON 1-2 (continued) Think about how you solved the problem. To check that 5 ft is reasonable you can look at the diagram again. So the height of the plaque is 8 ft – 3 ft, or 5 ft. 1-2

Use a Problem-Solving Plan Use the problem-solving plan. 1.An airplane travels 650 miles per hour (mph). A tailwind increases the airplane’s speed to 690 mph. How fast would the airplane travel if it flew against (opposite) the wind? 2.What is the greatest number of lines needed to divide a square into 4 regions? 3.How many ways can you give change for 50 cents using quarters, dimes, and nickels? COURSE 3 LESSON 1-2 610 mph 3 lines 10 ways 1-2
