2 OVERVIEW OF THREE-STAGE PROCESS 1)Department Self-Study 2)External Review (ERT)  External Review Team report, followed by department and dean written responses. 3)Five-Year Plan (FYP)  Construction of a five-year action plan;  Administrative memorandum of understanding (MOU) based on recommendations and discussion with the VPAA, dean, and department chair or appropriate program director.

3 THE ACADEMIC PROGRAM REVIEW (APR) CYCLE

4 APR CYCLE-YEAR 0 A.Department/program initiates APR cycle again, beginning with self-study. B.Spring: Self-Study Team is recruited and designated. C.Late Spring: SST undergoes training; sub- committees are formed to begin gathering data. APR Workshop provided each spring for departments that will undergo self-study in the following year.

5 APR CYCLE-YEAR 1 A. Oct. 15  Department/program self-study draft due to school dean including potential list of external reviewers. B. Dec. 15  Revised self-study based on school dean feedback, due to School Dean and VPAA; C. Mar. 31  External Review Team (ERT) visit in Feb—mid-March. ERT report submitted; D. May 15  Written response to ERT submitted to School Dean by Department/program. APR Workshop provided each spring for departments that will undergo self-study in the following year.

6 APR CYCLE-YEAR 2 A. Sept. 1  School Dean provides written response to ERT report & department/program response due; B. Oct. 15  Department/program draft Five Year Plan (FYP) due to School Dean; C. Dec. 15  Department/program final FYP due to School Dean and VPAA; D. Spring  VPAA, School Dean and Chair/Director meet to review all materials and FYP. E. End of spring semester  VPAA provides MOU to Department/program and Dean.

7 APR CYCLE-YEAR 3 A. June 30  Department/program submits year-end report. APR Workshop provided each spring for departments that will undergo self-study in the following year.

9 APR CYCLE-YEAR 5 A. June 30  Submit year-end report at end of the year. APR Workshop provided each spring for departments that will undergo self-study in the following year.

12 STAGE 2: EXTERNAL PROGRAM REVIEW The external review provides honest and objective advice to the program, the dean and the VPAA, about the program’s (a) strengths and areas of needed improvement (b) assessment activities, and (c) opportunities and plan for improvement. The external review is completed by the External Review Team (ERT), composed of two faculty members from external peer/aspirational programs The external review is based on the program’s self-study, a site visit, the dean’s response to the self-study, and other materials requested by the ERT itself.

13 STAGE 3: ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSE AND FIVE YEAR PLAN: The program will review the recommendations from the ERT report, the department written response and the dean’s response. In Year Two, together with the dean’s office, the department chair and faculty will draft a 5-year plan (Template Provided) based on recommendations. The departmental redraft of 5-year plan should include : Providing a plan for improvement over the next five Identifying and outlining suggested strategies for responding to each recommendation. Prioritizing the recommendations. Identifying and listing needed resources to respond to each recommendation, clearly differentiating between those that can be satisfied with existing resources and those needing new resources. Outlining a time-line for completion and implementation of each item.
