1 Inorganic and Organic Compunds!!

2 Inorganic Compound

3 The importance of Water
H2O

4 Water is necessary for life
Water = H2O H2 + O = H2O Polar covalent Bond ALL LIFE OCCURS IN WATER Inside and outside the cell

5 Polar Covalent Bond Pair of electrons shared unequally by 2 atoms
Oxygen has a stronger “attraction” for the electrons Oxygen is higher electronegativity

6 Hydrogen bonding -positive H atom in one H20 molecule attracted to negative O molecule is another H20 -can occur whenever an –OH exists in a larger molecule -Weak bond -creates a sticky molecule

7 Animal Cell made up of mostly water

8 Lungs 90% Blood 82% Skin 80% Muscle 76% Bones 28% 80kg Man = 48kg Water

9 Special properties of water
Cohesion & adhesion Surface tension, capillary action Good solvent Many molecule dissolve in H2O Hydrophilic vs. hypdrophobic Lower density as solid Ice floats! High specific heat Water stores heat High heat of vaporization Heats and cools slowly

10 Cohesion & Adhesion H bonding between H2O is cohesion
Water is “sticky”, sticks to itself Surface tension Drinking straw H bonding between H2P and other substances is adhesion Capillary action Meniscus Water climbs up towels and cloths

11

12 Water is the solvent of life
Polarity makes H2O a good solvent Polar H2O molecules surround + & - ions Solvents dissolve solutes creating solutions

13 Can you dissolve in Water
Can you dissolve in Water? Hydrophilic – ATTRACTS WATER Polar or Non-Polar??

14 OR NOT? Hydrophobic – chemicals that do NOT dissolve in water. Chemicals with no attraction to water. Polar or Non-Polar?

15

16 H2O is less dense when a solid
**H2O is less dense when a solid. MOST chemicals are more dense when solids **H bonds form crystals

17

18 Specific Heat Water resists heat
Can absorb heat from biochemical reactions Water evaporates. Organisms cool using evaporated heat of water.

19 Ionization and pH of H2O Water ionizes pH = the power of hydrogen
pH scale measures how acidic or basic something is Body ideal pH is 7.4

20

21 How H2O that effect the body?
Blood? Urine? pH of cells? Anything else???
