2  Facts are statements that are true, can be proven, and are accepted by the majority of people.  Facts often answer the questions of Who, What, Where, When, and How.  Facts may include numbers.

3  These statements are FACTS: › Michigan became a state on January 26, 1837. › The city of Detroit burned to the ground in 1805. › The three major industries in Michigan today are manufacturing, tourism, and agriculture (farming). › Mrs. Mahler is our principal.

4  Opinions cannot be proven.  Opinions are statements that tell what someone thinks, feels, or believes.  Opinions often use words like best, worst, good, or bad.  People may have different opinions than others.

5  These statements are OPINIONS: › West Maple is the best elementary school in Michigan. › The Tigers baseball team will have a really good season this year. › Vegetables are very good for you, and delicious, too. › The worst team in our league is my team.
