1 M. Gilchriese Stave Prototype Status Summary July 5, 2006

2 M. Gilchriese 2 Very Brief Status Summary(1) See http://phyweb.lbl.gov/atlaswiki/index.php?title=ATLAS_Upgrade_R%26D_-_Mechanical_Studies http://phyweb.lbl.gov/atlaswiki/index.php?title=ATLAS_Upgrade_R%26D_-_Mechanical_Studies Approximately 1m long prototype, appropriate for inner layers of upgraded silicon tracker Conceptual design complete Now working on tooling design –Iterating on conceptual outline, expect to complete in about one week –Detailed design of tooling to be done by iTi with input and review by LBL. Complete by about end FY06 such that fabrication could start in FY07(requires new money) In parallel working on procurement of honeycomb and fiber material. Expect to place order in late August, early September(such that actually costed in FY07). Current plan is to use existing aluminum tube(left over from pixels), flattened

3 M. Gilchriese 3 Very Brief Status Summary(2) Internal “review” around time of September meeting associated with Carmel would be good idea. Fabrication of subcomponents(CF sheets, bent and flattened tube, etc) would be done at LBL using automated cutter and autoclave. Fabrication starting towards end of calendar ’06 Followed by stave “core” assembly in early ’07. My guess is that then would follow parallel paths with different “cores”: (1) mechanical and thermal measurements(eg. deflection, thermal distortions) and (2) mounting of silicon. Both of these will take considerable time, but can decide later
