SCIENTIFIC NOTATION Expressing a quantity as: a number between 1 and 10 multiplied by 10 to the appropriate power.

STANDARD NOTATION TO SCIENTIFIC NOTATION STEPS 1.Move the decimal point to the left or to the right so that only one digit remains to the left of the decimal point. 2.Determine the exponent by counting the number of places you moved the decimal point. 3.If the original number was greater than “1” the exponent is positive. 4.If the original number was less than “1” the exponent is negative.

Example Standard Notation to Scientific Notation 6,467 Move decimal 3 places to the left 6.467 Add positive exponent 6.467 X 10 3 0.056 Move decimal 2 places to the right 5.6 Add negative exponent5.6 X 10 -2

SCIENTIFIC NOTATION TO STANDARD NOTATION 1.The exponent determines how many places the decimal will be moved. 2. Move the decimal to the right if the exponent is positive. Move the decimal to the left if the exponent is negative.

Example Scientific Notation to Standard Notation 4.76 X 10 3 Move decimal 3 places (determined by exponent) to the right (determined by sign of exponent). 4,760 6.405 X 10 -2 Move decimal 2 places to the left 0.06405
